SEOUL -- Samsung Electronics will release a new rugged tablet PC at home in November, targeting ordinary customers who want tough models favored by field operatives in the business-to-business industry. This is the first time for Samsung to sell the retail version of its rugged tablet PCs through online shopping malls.

Rugged tablet PCs that can withstand shock, heat, moisture and dust are widely used by construction workers and soldiers who need tough devices. Samsung released its first rugged tablet "Galaxy Tab Active" in 2014.

Online shopping mall operators including Coupang, the South Korean counterpart of Amazon, started receiving pre-orders for Samsung's rugged tablet PC model "Galaxy Tab Active 3." According to Coupang, pre-ordered tablets will be delivered to customers after November 9. The tech giant has opened a dedicated product page on its online shop but did not specify when it will be released.

Galaxy Tab Active 3 with an eight-inch display comes with an S-Pen, Samsung's stylus pen for smart devices, and a large-capacity 5,050mAh battery that can be replaced. Samsung said the stylus pen makes Tab Active 3 ideal for medical staff and other field workers who wear gloves all the time. Instead of removing gloves every time they try to use the tablet, doctors and constructors can use S-Pen to control the device.

Samsung said that its rugged tablet has passed "MIL-STD-810H," a U.S. military standard test, which outlines the testing and design requirements of equipment and devices to verify their ability to withstand stress caused by surrounding environments throughout the lifecycle. Tab Active 3 without any protective casing can survive a free fall from a 1.2 meter (3.9 feet) height.

Tech-savvy South Korean consumers have generally welcomed Samsung's unusual decision to release its business-exclusive tablet PC model. "I really like how it has a replaceable battery and waterproof ability. I never thought Samsung would sell this to ordinary customers," said "WhoAmI," a user from South Korean online IT community Clien. Another user "1st" said: "I think this would be the best for kids!"
