SEOUL -- SK Telecom will apply a T Map-based car navigation service optimized for advanced driver systems and connectivity environments to the infotainment system of new Jaguar Land Rover vehicles to be sold in South Korea. The two companies would cooperate on ways to provide high-quality, high-capacity media services in real time within a 5G vehicle environment.
By providing separate lines of telematics and Infotainment, SK Telecom (SKT) said it is possible to personalize infotainment services. T Map-based high-precision maps provide drivers with a pleasant and safe driving experience by organically combining with vehicle systems and supporting next-generation intelligent driver assistance systems.
Along with existing functions such as real-time traffic information and fast and accurate road guidance services, SKT said its service would provide information on charging stations for electric vehicles, information on optimal routes that can be driven with current battery conditions, and customized functions that automatically add charging stations on the route as transit points.
"We will expand a mobility ecosystem by strengthening cooperation with global automobile manufacturers," SKT's mobility business head Lee Jong-ho said in a statement.
SKT has tried to hook an infotainment system onto 5G networks for seamless car entertainment including music and video streaming services as well as convenient mobility services including the live high-definition map update, which is an important technology feature for autonomous cars.
In May, SKT agreed to provide its integrated in-vehicle infotainment service to Volvo cars to be sold in South Korea. All service apps will be updated through a wireless network, allowing drivers to use the latest features without having to visit the service center. SKT's service would be combined with various services optimized for each vehicle environment such as a car navigation platform and an artificial intelligence platform.
