SEOUL -- South Korea's Hyundai shipbuilding group has completed the construction of a very large container ship powered by natural gas for Eastern Pacific Shipping (EPS), a ship management company headquartered in Singapore.
The 14,800 TEU container ship built by Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries, a unit of the shipbuilding group, will be delivered on September 15. TEU is based on the volume of a 20-foot-long (6.1 m) intermodal container, a standard-sized metal box that can be easily transferred between different modes of transportation, such as ships, trains and trucks.
The container ship, which is 366 meters long and 51 meters wide, has a large liquefied natural gas (LNG) fuel tank, which enables a round trip to and from Asia and Europe on a single charge. The tank used nine percent nickel steel that can maintain its strength even in a cryogenic environment (-163 degrees Celsius). Hyundai Samho has won orders from EPS to build six LNG-fueled container ships and will deliver them all by the third quarter of 2022.
