SEOUL -- Based on its unmanned control tower solution, Doosan Infracore, a construction equipment maker in South Korea, has released a cloud-based construction management solution that would maximize the efficiency of earthwork to reduce cost and time.

Earthworks are construction procedures including excavation, transport, placement and compaction to process the surface of the earth. It is a comprehensive work that requires accuracy, heavy equipment and a lot of manpower.

Doosan Infracore described its new earthwork management solution called "Xite Cloud" as the first step to commercialize Concept-X, an unmanned control tower solution that manages the whole process of construction.

The new solution released by Doosan Infracore allows constructors to manage different earthworks through a single platform. It provides digitalized analytical maps of construction sites. With Xite Cloud, Doosan said that even on steep slopes and cliff topography, advanced drone measurements can yield accurate work volumes. Vast amounts of on-site data can be quickly and accurately analyzed.

Doosan said its earthwork management solution was demonstrated at some 10 apartment complex construction sites. The company plans to use 5G mobile communication to link the management solution to heavy construction equipment.

Last year, the company demonstrated the operation of Concept-X, an automated construction system that used a 5G mobile communication network and a drone equipped with a 3D scanner to share land data with other equipment such as an unmanned excavator.

Doosan Inferacore has vowed to step up the commercialization of its teleoperation technology and a telematics service that remotely monitors construction machines based on information and communication technology, as well as a 3D machine guidance system that could be combined with AI technologies to develop self-driving excavators.

With rapid advances in sensor and computer technologies, there have been growing demands for autonomous equipment at warehouses, distribution centers and construction sites. The utilization of 5G at construction sites has been researched by South Korean technology and construction companies.

Hyundai Construction Equipment, a construction equipment maker, teamed up with American software company Trimble and SK Telecom in December 2018 to develop a 5G-based smart construction platform that would use artificial intelligence to analyze 3D data collected by unmanned drones.
