SEOUL -- A smartphone app has been developed in a state project to provide accurate and verified information about a novel coronavirus to doctors and other medical personnel who have been deluged with lots of unfiltered or misguided data every day at the front line.

Medical staff can download the so-called "Disaster Med Info" app from May 18 to receive up-to-date information about COVID-19 as well as the latest medical journals and educational data, said the Ministry of Interior and Safety which has joined hands with a foundation created by the Hyundai auto group and Severance Hospital to develop the app.

Since the epidemic began in earnest in South Korea in February, thousands of medical personnel have been involved in a desperate fight to slow the spread of the highly contagious disease. They were often exposed to misleading and unproven medical information.

"The new app was developed to provide medical staff with comprehensive information by finding accurate information in their field response among a number of sporadic information related to COVID-19," the ministry said in a statement, adding it would be a good guide for doctors and other medical personnel in their quick and correct response to an epidemic.

The app provides a variety of medical-related information so that medical staff can quickly find data verified by authorized domestic and foreign agencies, the ministry said. Medical staff will be given various necessary guidelines and the latest research results in other disaster situations.
