SEOUL -- In a campaign to bring changes to the daily life of people with information communication technology, KT, a top telecom company in South Korea, used artificial intelligence to provide a real voice for a 48-year-old mother who is congenitally hearing-impaired.

Kim So-hee, a mother of two children, realized her life-long dream of being able to speak to her family with her very own voice. KT used AI technology to analyze the voices of Kim's family and people who are in a similar age group. AI was also used to carefully scan Kim's oral structure.

"I am so happy and grateful that I am able to speak with my voice," Kim said in her synthesized voice to her family. "Mom, please do not worry about me. I was able to live happily because of you."

AI, big data and real-time computer graphic image (CGI) generation are being used to create realistic and interactive artificial humans. "We will continue to carry out this campaign to bring a change to individuals," KT's future value task force head Kim Hung-wook said in a statement on Thursday.

In February, a special TV documentary depicting a sorrow-stricken mother meeting her daughter who died of a rare incurable disease at the age of seven in the virtual reality (VR) world has sent sensational shocks at home and abroad. The MBC documentary titled "I Met You" aired on February 6 has also brought many South Korean viewers to their tears.

"Maybe it's a real paradise," Jang Ji-sung, the mother of four children, said of the moment she met her deceased daughter, Nayeon.

For eight months, the production team has used VR technology to implement Nayeon's face, body, and voice. The mother said she had decided to appear in the documentary to comfort "someone who has lost a child like me, or who has lost a brother or a parent."

The VR studio involved in the project received attention from those in other countries who are in a similar situation after they lost their loved ones.
