SEOUL -- LG Electronics has released a new smart cordless vacuum cleaner with mopping capability to solidify its leading position in a country where the floor of most homes is covered with linoleum, a floor covering made of composite materials including fabric, plastic and vinyl.

Cordless vacuum cleaners have become popular in South Korea during the last decade for its versatile and easy-to-use characteristics. While young consumers and single households prefer trendy cleaners, housewives and families prefer cleaners with practical water-cleaning or mopping features so that they can easily clean linoleum floors.

LG said in a statement on Friday that "CordZero A9S ThinQ", a cordless vacuum cleaner, is lighter and has more convenient features than its predecessors. The new cordless cleaner also has connected features that allow users to check the condition of its filter and dust bin. It is capable of self-diagnosis to find out problems.

According to industry data, the cordless vacuum cleaner market is expanding rapidly with an average annual growth of 40 percent. Electronics makers said that about 1.4 million cordless vacuum cleaners were sold in South Korea in 2019. LG's CordZero controlled about 50 percent of the domestic market, followed by Samsung Electronics and Dyson, an American company, with 20 percent each. Chinese products were favored by young consumers.
