SEOUL -- A smart food manufacturing plant built by Hyundai Green Food, a food distribution and catering company, was put into operation. It is equipped with advanced grilling and defrosting technologies as well as oxygen absorbers to preserve freshness.

The food manufacturing plant in Seongnam, a southern satellite city of Seoul, is capable of producing 50 tons of food products every day. Hyundai Green Food, affiliated with the Hyundai Department Store Group, operates catering and the wholesale distribution of food products through a cold chain system.

Hyundai Green Food said Wednesday that the plant reflects efforts to become a comprehensive food company by strengthening its manufacturing capacity and efficiency of its meal service.

Some 83.3 billion won ($70.2 million) has been invested in the plant equipped with modern facilities such as ultrasonic waves to clean heavy metals or residual pesticides, the seasoning of meat while vacuuming, and optical screening machines to detect fine foreign substances.

Currently, some 300 kinds of food can be produced, but the company plans to expand the number of products available to 1,200 by the first half of 2021. "We will enhance the competitiveness of our existing businesses while expanding our position as a B2C food manufacturing company," said Hyundai Green Food's strategic planning head Kim Hae-gon.
