SEOUL -- In a bid to accelerate its push for car infotainment, LG Electronics has forged a partnership with Cerence, a U.S. automotive software company, to create a convenient in-car experience through voice commands that allow drivers and passengers to have better control over car functions, navigation and multimedia content.

LG said in a statement on Tuesday that a memorandum of understanding was signed last week at CES 2020 in Las Vegas with Cerence, which was spun off from Nuance Communications, a conversational AI program developer, to develop a new software solution.

It was LG's second deal in Las Vegas. The South Korean company strengthened its partnership with Luxoft, a Swiss-based software company, to develop upgraded automotive solutions including digital cockpits through a joint venture to be established in Santa Clara, California.

LG has unveiled webOS Auto, a car infotainment solution, which was integrated into Microsoft's connected vehicle platform. The webOS Auto solution was based on a Linux kernel-based multitasking operating system for smart devices.

"This new offering will support automakers and tier-one suppliers as they rapidly innovate, speed the time to market, and deliver a state-of-the-art in-car experience unlike any other," Cerence CEO Sanjay Dhawan was quoted as saying.

LG said the webOS Auto in-vehicle infotainment (IVI) system will be integrated with Cerence ARK, a new turnkey voice assistant. "We look forward to this collaboration with Cerence to develop a turnkey voice solution for today's auto and component makers to accelerate the arrival of the connected car," said LG's chief technology officer Park Il-pyung.

LG said that original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and Tier 1 manufacturers will be given a pre-packaged, full-stack IVI software system that will shorten the time-to-market, bring an immersive voice experience and rich content ecosystem to connected cars and improve the user experience inside the vehicle. Tier 1 suppliers are manufacturers that deal directly with OEM companies
