LAS VEGAS -- The Consumer Technology Association (CTA), which hosts CES, the world's biggest technology exhibition, has presented "Intelligence of Things" as this year's top technology trend.

CTA held a pre-media event, "2020 Tech Trends to Watch," at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center in Las Vegas. The event has been held for media outlets every year just before the opening of CES. At this year’s event, CTA announced this year's technology trend, based on accumulated technology trends and data.

This year, everything goes beyond "Internet of Things (IoT)," which connects to the internet, to "Intelligence of Things" that will change the world rapidly, CTA vice president Steve Koenig said, suggesting that an era when things were simply connected to the internet will be converted into the stage where things become intelligent.

"The accurate meaning is that Internet of Things is evolving into Intelligence of Things and intelligence will be added to connection," Joo Young-sup, a Korea University chair-professor who formerly headed the Small and Medium Business Administration, said about the unfamiliar concept of "Intelligence of Things."

The next technology trend proposed by CTA is 5G mobile telecommunication. The United States, China and Europe followed suit after South Korea began commercializing 5G services for the first time in the world. CTA forecast that U.S. shipments of 5G smartphones, expected to reach 20 million units in 2020, will increase five-fold to 100 million units in 2022, exceeding those of 4G phones. It predicted that 2022 is when 5G service will become popular in the U.S.

About the utilization of 5G networks, CTA predicted that (Massive) IoT, which is connected to a large number of terminals to create and share information, and (Critical) IoT, which is connected accurately and securely, will be separated, with each of them having a different field of expectation.

Prospects continued for next-generation transportation in mobility technology. Mobility trends include Multi Modal Transportation, which uses diverse mobility devices such as electric scooters and kickboards, self-driving technologies and C-V2X, which connects vehicles to vehicles, vehicles to pedestrians and vehicles to traffic infrastructure. The exhibition started at CES last year, but eVTOL (vertical take-off and landing aircraft) was also introduced at this year's trends in mobility technology.
