SEOUL -- LGU+, a mobile carrier in South Korea, joined hands with DoubleMe, a holographic mixed reality platform provider based in California, to develop 5G-based telepresence technology that could be used widely in broad areas such as entertainment and sports.

Telepresence allows people to feel as if they were present, to give the appearance of being present, or to have an effect, via telerobotics, at a place other than their true location. Users may be given the ability to affect the remote location. A popular application is found in telepresence videoconferencing, the highest possible level of videotelephony. Telepresence via video deploys greater technical sophistication and improved fidelity of sight and sound.

LGU+ said that it would establish a multi-access edge computing (MEC) network that processes data from users and servers installed nearby to provide high-capacity 3D hologram content that requires the process of 20MB of data per second in real-time. An artificial intelligence algorithm that increases the quality of hologram content will be implemented on MEC.

MEC, formerly known as mobile edge computing, is a network architecture concept that enables cloud computing capabilities and an IT service environment at the edge of the cellular network. MEC technology is designed to be implemented at cellular base stations or other edge nodes and enables flexible and rapid deployment of new applications and services for customers.

"When 3D cameras for smartphones become more common, telepresence technology is expected to draw more attention," said Lee Hae-sung, executive director of LGU+’s future technology development division. "Through cooperation with DoubleMe, we will explore various telepresence-based business models such as telepresence meetings, teleconsulting and teleeducation."

LGU+ will use DoubleMe's 3D capture system, HoloPortal, that converts 2D videos into dynamic 3D models in real-time for various 3D content markets. The HoloPortal Studio captures the magic and motion of real people or pets in real-time, from multiple camera angles. With propriety algorithm technology recreating a highly accurate 3D model of the live performance.

"Working with LGU+ which commercialized 5G for the first time in the world and boasts the best 5G network quality at home, we will be able to speed up the popularity of holograms," DoubleMe CEO and founder Albert Heekwan Kim said. "In addition to B2B, there is a huge possibility that holograms will be used more widely in such areas as entertainment and sports."
