SEOUL -- Samsung Electronics partnered with SK Telecom to develop a 5G-based vertical TV that would allow smartphone users to enjoy advanced media services such as multi-view broadcasting, as the popularization of 8K media requires a variety of 8K contents and a network that reliably supports large bandwidth.

If SKT's 5G network and ultra-low-latency multi-view broadcasting technology are combined, high-definition multi-view images can be seen continuously, SK Telecom (SKT) said in a statement, adding it would support its 5G technology to allow Samsung TVs to receive high-resolution content, while Samsung will adopt its artificial intelligence technology to upscale lower content to its 8K TVs.

Park Jin-hyo, head of SKT's network technology R&D center, said that 5G-based 8K TVs are a combination of a 5G network and ultra-high-definition TV technologies. "I am confident that 5G technology will advance the hypermedia era."

In April, Samsung unveiled a 43-inch premium QLED television with its screen being freely rotated horizontally and vertically if users want a mobile media experience. It can be interlocked with smartphones for YouTube and other social networking services. The new TV called Sero (vertical) in Korean can operate by pressing a smartphone app or bringing a smartphone to a TV.

Samsung has said the media environment was rapidly changing with many young people involved in multitasking like games, web surfing and SNS by changing windows and consuming contents on mobile devices often in vertical form.
