SEOUL -- About 400 experts including North Korean experts and civic society representatives from home and abroad have participated at an international forum held in Seoul to discuss issues regarding the Korean peninsula.

Experts who participated in "2019 One Korea International Forum", held under the agenda of "Historical Opportunities for Unification of the Korean Peninsula: Vision, Leadership and Action", at The Plaza Hotel in central Seoul on Wednesday, discussed the rapidly changing situation on the Korean peninsula and comprehensive strategies to establish the right solution.

The event kicked off with welcoming speeches by Global Peace Foundation president James Flynn, Republic of Korea Constitution Association chairman Yoo Kyung-hyun and Korea Veterans Association chairman Kang Young-kyu.

Flynn said in a greeting speech that the process of unification on the Korean peninsula should be led by Koreans, based on universal principles and values deeply rooted in Korean culture.

The global peace Foundation president also stressed that by stimulating the world to support the unification process led by Seoul, a new unification framework, designed to end the tragic division of the Korean peninsula and to demonstrate the economic potential of unified Korea, can be established.

After the opening ceremony the sessions under themes of "Taking Action for Korean Unification", "A News Unified Korea and Economic Opportunity", "Denuclearization and Lasting Peace in the Context of a Unified Korea" and "North Korea Religious Freedom and Human Rights Advocacy " were held.

Meanwhile, the Washington-based Global Peace Foundation, which hosted the event, is a non-profit organization founded in 2009. It is active in 23 countries around the world. The foundation has won a special advisory position on the U.N. Economic and Social Council and is also a member of the UN's public affairs bureau.
