SEOUL -- Through collaboration with Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi, Samsung Electronics has developed a powerful camera sensor for mobile devices which is equivalent to that of a digital single-lens reflex (DSLR) camera for professional use. Mass production will begin later this month.

Samsung said Monday that its "108 megapixel Samsung ISOCELL Bright HMX is the industry's first mobile image sensor to go beyond 100 million pixels.

The new image sensor's resolution is equivalent that of a professional DSLR, welcoming the era of super-sharp high-resolution photography on mobile devices, Samsung said, adding the 1/1.33-inch size image sensor can absorb more light in low-light conditions to bring superb images at any lighting environments and shoot super-high-definition 6K in 30 frames per second.

Samsung's announcement follows last week's surprise joint announcement of Xiaomi's new 64-megapixel imaging technology. The Chinese company has chosen Samsung over Japanese electronics maker Sony for its new 64-megapixel smartphone camera sensor to be used for its flagship smartphones.

"For ISOCELL Bright HMX, Xiaomi and Samsung have worked closely together from the early conceptual stage to production that has resulted in a groundbreaking 108Mp image sensor," Xiaomi president Lin Bin was quoted as saying. "We are very pleased that picture resolutions previously available only in a few top-tier DSLR cameras can now be designed into smartphones."

"Through close collaboration with Xiaomi, ISOCELL Bright HMX is the first mobile image sensor to pack over 100 million pixels and delivers unparalleled color reproduction and stunning detail with advanced Tetracell and ISOCELL Plus technology," said Park Yong-in, executive vice president of Samsung's sensor business.
