SEOUL -- LGU+, a South Korean mobile carrier, will start 5G roaming services in Finland through a partnership with Elisa, a Finnish telecom company which commercialized a 5G telecom service in June for the first time as a North European company. The service would begin on July 19.

LGU+ said in a statement on Tuesday that it has successfully tested its roaming service in partnership with Elisa. The company will carry out promotions to mark the launch of its roaming service in Finland by providing customers free of charge for a limited time.

Roaming services provided by mobile carriers allow customers to use the same telecom services in other countries for an extra fee. Elisa is the first 5G operator in Finland to set up a 5G network in several cities including Helsinki, Tampere, Jyvaskyla and Turku.

Many South Koreans choose roaming services when they travel abroad because using it's cheaper and more convenient than subscribing for a mobile plan and registering SIM cards every time they visit other countries.

Other mobile carriers KT and SK Telecom also provide 5G roaming services which allow customers to use 5G networks in the United States and some countries in Europe where 5G services are available. If a traveler visits a country where 5G is not available, his or her phone would connect to 4G mobile networks provided by local partners.

Finland is a rising tourist spot for South Korean overseas travelers. According to Finnish tourism authorities, the number of South Korean visitors has increased by 30 percent in 2018 from a year ago. The most favored tourist spot is the Finnish Lake District, a forest-covered lake area created by glacial remnants from the ice age.
