SEOUL -- LG CNS, an information technology wing of South Korea's LG Group, forged a partnership with a food distributor to apply blockchain technology to an agricultural product supply chain network.

LG CNS said in a statement on Tuesday that it would work with SayIT to ensure the safe supply of fresh agricultural products by establishing a blockchain-based supply chain network platform.

Blockchain is a decentralized network which each connected node or a computer plays the role of a server. Each node shares identical ledgers or logs which are synchronized every time new information is added. Because synchronization is carried out in real-time, a blockchain network is virtually unhackable and is capable of tracking information.

"In the process of buying and selling materials, it is difficult to accurately check the date of origin and processing," a SayIT official was quoted as saying. "These kinds of issues will be dramatically improved on a blockchain-based platform as all information is efficiently shared."

LG CNS' blockchain technology will be combined with SayIT's food distribution network for contract food services and school canteens. When the network platform is established, every step of food distribution will be transparently managed.
