SEOUL -- Hyundai Heavy Industries, the world's largest shipbuilder, beat European competitors to clinch a $49 million order to supply emergency power generators for a nuclear power plant in India's Tamil Nadu state.

The shipbuilder said Tuesday that it has teamed up with its trading unit, Hyundai Corporation, to supply ten 6.3MW engines for the Kudankulam plant run by Powerica, an Indian private power generation company, by 2022.

Emergency power generators at nuclear power plants are facilities that help maintain the reactor's stability by supplying power to circulating water pumps and others when the plant stops due to emergency situations.

Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) said that the technological prowess of its power generators was recognized through the deal in India. European engine manufacturers have dominated the emergency generator market for nuclear power plants. The shipbuilder hopes to win more orders in India, which is expected to build 21 new nuclear power plants by 2031.
