SK Telecom demonstrates 5G-based smart office environment

SEOUL -- In a high-profile event attended by top government officials, SK Telecom, a top mobile carrier in South Korea, demonstrated a 5G-based smart office environment which ensures the connectivity, security and the connectivity of workflow by using a variety of next-generation technologies including deep learning and mixed reality.

SK Telecom (SKT) showed off next-generation features Thursday at its smart office in central Seoul, with Science and ICT Minister Yoo Young-min and three other ministers watching how 5G's super-fast mobile data communication can help improve the work environment.

"5G is not only the extension of 3G and 4G, but it is the source and key foundation which creates new innovative services such as smart factories and autonomous driving," Yoo told reporters, adding the government would provide full support so that South Korea could become a main player in the business-to-business (B2B) market.

The smart office allows in registered employees by recognizing their face with cameras and artificial intelligence technology. An employee can sit at any workspace and start working by placing a smartphone onto a docking station.

Mixed reality technology which simulates a conference room was demonstrated. People can watch the same screen using virtual displays with a delivery robot roaming and carrying parcels.

The global smart office market, which is growing rapidly thanks to the development of 5G and internet of things (IoT) devices, is estimated to reach $46.1 billion, according to global market research company MarketsandMarkets.
