SEOUL -- SK Telecom, a mobile carrier which played a role in introducing the 5G era in South Korea, will work with the state-run operator of nuclear power plants to develop smart solutions that would optimize power generation efficiency and enhance safety through a real-time monitoring system.

A memorandum of understanding was signed on Friday between SK Telecom (SKT) and Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP) to utilize advanced technologies such as 5G, artificial intelligence and big data for the establishment of smart nuclear power plants.

"We hope our cooperation with ST Telecom will increase energy efficiency and the safety of nuclear power plants," KHNP President Chung Jae-hoon said in a statement. SKT's Digital Twin technology will be used to introduce a safety management system that will monitor facilities in real time by digitally implementing them in three dimensions.

Nuclear power plants which require a high level of safety. SKT and KHNP will develop a system to collect accurate real-time data from connected sensors about the current state, productivity and operation of real assets by virtualizing and simulating assets with software.

KHNP said that prognosis and diagnosis through digital simulations would optimize power generation efficiency and enhance safety.
