SEOUL -- South Korea's top mobile carrier, SK Telecom, agreed with Instagram, a photo and video-sharing social networking service owned by Facebook, to cooperate in digital advertising and marketing by utilizing new techniques that are suitable in the 5G era.

The agreement was reached at SKI's headquarters in Seoul between Ha Hyung-il, who heads SKI's integrated innovation center, and Instagram Vice President Jim Squires. They would discuss related details first when applying Instagram's new advertising marketing technique in South Korea.

In spreading contents suitable for the 5G era, SK Telecom plans to utilize a variety of Instagram services such as Stories, a feature that lets users post photos and videos that vanish after 24 hours, and IGTV, a standalone vertical video application for smartphones.

"We are going to combine 5G network's competitive edge and realistic media technologies such as AR and VR with Facebook and Instagram's global SNS and push for innovation in digital advertising and marketing," Ha said in a statement, adding the media sector would l become more important in the 5G era.

Squires said that through long-term cooperation with SKT, his company would create new ways for users to express themselves and communicate with others in Stories and IGTV.

Squires told reporters on Tuesday that in the e-commerce industry, big-name companies and entrepreneurs advertise their products and service on their Instagram accounts as users are often redirected to the brand's websites for actual purchases. "Stories can also be considered an effective way to communicate closely with customers by sharing casual contents."
