SEOUL -- Samsung Electronics unveiled a 43-inch premium QLED television for the millennial generation with its screen being freely rotated horizontally and vertically if users want a mobile media experience. It can be interlocked with smartphones for YouTube and other social networking services.

Only one model will be available in South Korean in May, with its price set at 1.89 million won ($1,633). There will be no overseas sales, and Samsung plans to release a bigger model at home if the market's reaction is good.

Samsung said the new TV tentatively named "Vertical" can be connected to mobile devices using a near-frequency-communication (NFC) system. It can operate by pressing a smartphone app or bringing a smartphone to a TV.

The new TV was based on the idea of providing an optimized mobile media experience, Han Jong-hee, head of Samsung's visual display business, told reporters on Monday. "Users can move away from the existing TV frame and switch the screen vertically and horizontally to accommodate contents and viewing situations that they want."

"To the millennial generation, TV is a completely different concept from the older generation," Han said, adding that Samsung has tried to highlight a variety of usability features, such as chatting and searching while valuing essential functions such as big screen and ultra-high definition images.

Samsung officials said the media environment is rapidly changing with many young people involved in multitasking like games, web surfing and SNS by changing windows and consuming contents in mobile devices often in vertical form. The frame can be titled to provide a comfortable angle to watch.
