SEOUL --  Hyundai Mobis, the car parts subsidiary of South Korea's Hyundai auto group, has developed an adaptive air suspension technology that will help autonomous vehicles travel smoothly in various road conditions while maintaining stability.

Hyundai Mobis said in a statement on Monday that its "Preview Air Suspension" technology adaptively adjusts the height of a car and the softness of its suspension based on navigation map data. The system actively controls shock absorbers separately by reading road situations ahead.

It provides the best riding quality. When a car approaches a school zone with multiple speed bumps, the system will soften shock absorbers. When a car travels on a high overpass in a windy condition, its height will be lowered to provide stability and maximize its aerodynamic ability.

"We anticipate that our air suspension technology, which responds by predicting road situations, will not only assist traffic safety but provide optimum ride quality in the era of self-driving," Hyundai Mobis' Chassis Component Development Center senior director Kim Se-il was quoted as saying.

In 2012, Hyundai Mobis has commercialized an electronically controlled air suspension system that optimizes a vehicle's height regardless of the weight of passengers or cargo. Kim said navigation map data was connected to a suspension system. The company will develop an upgraded camera-based adaptive suspension system using camera sensors in 2020 for a much more accurate prediction control system.

Global carmakers have adopted an active damper system or an adaptive suspension system, but they are used for premium cars. Air suspension systems provide active controlling of components as they are controlled separately by control units connected to engine-driven air pumps. The global air suspension market will reach $8.4 billion, according to Markets and Markets, a market research firm.
