SEOUL -- On its home turf, initial sales of Samsung Electronics' new flagship smartphone, Galaxy S10, were brisker than its previous S9 series, benefiting partly from the better-than-expected popularity of its 5G model.

Samsung said Friday it has sold more than one million units of its Galaxy S10 series as of April 23, 47 days after the new device hit the South Korean market on March 8. It took 60 days for S9 to reach the one million mark.

Samsung has sold 230,000 units of S10's 5G model since its rollout on April 5, helped by an active government campaign to establish a 5G mobile network for the first time in the world.

According to Strategy Analytics, a market research company, the global shipment of smartphones in 2018 was estimated at 1.4 billion, down 5.1 percent from a year ago. It was the first reverse growth witnessed since the smartphone boom in the early 2010s.
