SEOUL -- Posco E&C, a construction arm of South Korea's top steelmaker, has won an order estimated at $100 million from Ener AB, a Mexican power company, to build a congeneration (combined heat and power) thermal power plant.

Posco E&C said in a statement Monday that it would build a 1MW-class congeneration thermal power plant in Magnelec, some 1,200 kilometers (745 miles) northwest of Mexico City.

"With this order, we will be able to gain the upper hand in securing additional orders in Mexico," a Posco E&C official was quoted as saying. Ener AB builds power storage and facilities related to the development of natural gas as well as seawater desalination.

The congeneration thermal plant generates electricity and steam at the same time by driving a steam turbine generated by a boiler. While conventional power plants lose more than 50 percent of their thermal energy during the generating process, a congeneration plant is capable of maintaining up to 80 percent thermal energy.
