SEOUL -- SK D&D, a real estate and renewable energy development arm of South Korea's SK Group, has diversified its business portfolio into fuel cells through a distributorship agreement with Bloom Energy based in California.

Under the agreement signed on Wednesday, Bloom Energy would supply fuel cells for projects developed by SK D&D. Bloom Energy servers convert natural gas or biogas fuel into electricity without combustion, using solid oxide fuel cell technology, and generate virtually no smog-forming particulate emissions.

"Through this agreement, SK D&D will diversify its business portfolio by adding fuel cells to existing renewable energy businesses such as wind power and solar power," SK D&D CEO Ham Yun-seong said in a statement. He said his company aims to become a leader in South Korea's decentralized renewable energy power generation market.

The agreement came after South Korea unveiled a fresh energy roadmap in January to secure its firm leadership in the global market for hydrogen fuels cell electric vehicles by producing 6.2 million units for domestic consumption and exports by 2040.

Because of its eco-friendly characteristics, fuel cells are considered the next-generation renewable power source. Fuel cells produce heat, electricity and water through a thermochemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen. President Moon Jae-in has envisaged a "hydrogen economy" to use fuel cells in the production of automobiles and electricity.
