SEOUL -- South Korea joined an international race to develop quantum computing technology and hardware under a five-year development program with state money.

The Ministry of Science and ICT said Thursday that the government would inject 44.5 billion won ($39.8 million) for five years into the development of core technologies related to quantum computation and a practical five-qubit quantum computer by 2023.

Binary digital electronic computers are based on transistors and capacitors with data encoded into binary digits (bits). Quantum computation uses quantum bits or qubits, based on the principles of quantum theory, which explains the nature and behavior of energy and matter on the quantum level.

Theoretically, a quantum computer would gain enormous processing power and perform tasks using all possible permutations simultaneously. The development of quantum computers is still in its infancy due to technical challenges. Quantum computers have yet to solve a problem faster than a classical computer.
