SEOUL -- Japan's Toshiba is expected to become the first overseas customer of crystal sound LCD (CSD) PC panels developed by LG Display, a leading flat panel maker in South Korea, in a deal that signals the expanded use of crystal sound technology in small products such as monitors, notebooks and smartphones.

The deal has yet to be finalized, but LG Display and its parent company, LG Electronics, are in talks on producing CSD notebooks and smartphones. "In the monitor market, demand is great for crystal sound products," an LG Display official said.

LG Display has a two-track strategy to apply crystal sound OLED (CSO) technology, released in 2017, to large products and CSD to small devices. PCs with speakers mounted at the bottom of the back screen result in poor sound quality, but crystal sound products provide a more immersive sound from the front.

A typical speaker includes an electric signal that contains sound information and flows through the coil, and a magnet generates sound with pressure to make the diaphragm move back and forth. CSO puts the diaphragm on the OLED panel to generate sound in front of the panel without a magnet.
