SEOUL -- Ahead of this week's technology conference, CES, in Las Vegas, Samsung Electronics announced a rare business tie-up with its American to add Apple's new streaming service to Samsung smart TVs this spring.

In an industry first, a new iTunes Movies and TV Shows app will debut only on Samsung's smart TVs in more than 100 countries, the world's largest smartphone maker said in a statement, adding AirPlay 2 support would be available on Samsung's smart TVs worldwide.

Samsung said that support on smart TVs produced in 2018 would be made available through firmware update. Users can access their existing iTunes library and browse the iTunes Store to buy or rent from a selection of movies and TV episodes, including 4K HDR (high-dynamic-range) movies. HDR video technology provides vivid colors and accurate images.

The South Korean company said that iTunes Movies and TV Shows would work seamlessly with Samsung's smart TV services to create a consistent experience, while AirPlay 2 support enables customers to effortlessly play videos, photos, music, podcasts and more from Apple devices directly to smart TVs.

Samsung's visual display business executive vice president Choo Jong-suk told reporters in Las Vegas that Apple appeared to have accepted a partnership by considering the annual sale of 45 million Samsung TVs worldwide. "Samsung Electronics first proposed a partnership" despite competition with Apple in the smartphone market, he said.

"iPhone, iPad and Mac users have yet another way to enjoy all their favorite content on the biggest screen in their home," said Eddy Cue, senior vice president of Apple's internet software and services.
