SEOUL -- South Korea's southern port city of Busan was rewarded for strenuous efforts to achieve no fatal traffic accidents in child protection areas for two years. The most outstanding of all was a pilot program to pack utility poles with yellow speed limit signs and traffic safety posters drawn by children near their schools.
Busan was selected by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety as the best state body in a government campaign to improve traffic safety. In the past two years, there have no fatal traffic accidents in child protection zones in Busan.
Among other things, Busan launched a pilot program last year to pack the low middle parts of 85 utility poles near six primary schools with traffic safety posters and yellow speed limit signs informing drivers that they are traveling in child protection zones.
The joint program with the Road Traffic Authority and KEPCO, a state utility company, received a favorable evaluation for the effect of driver's school zone recognition and speed deceleration. Ten children were selected in a contest to design traffic safety posters. Busan plans to expand the program to other areas.
