SEOUL -- Hyundai Motor has developed a smart fingerprint authentication access and ignition system to provide easy and convenient access to vehicles without a bulky key chain. The company said its system has five times stronger security than ordinary or smart keys.

The company said in a statement Monday that it would install its smart fingerprint authentication system in a China-exclusive variant model of its best-selling sport utility vehicle, Santa Fe, during the first quarter of 2019. The SUV will automatically change the position of seats, rear view mirrors and the position of its driving wheel by identifying different drivers.

The new authentication system allows drivers to unlock the door and start the engine by placing a finger onto sensors fitted into door handles and a driving wheel. The registered fingerprints will be encrypted to provide customization of the car settings.

Hyundai said its fingerprint sensors detect a tiny amount of electricity that flows in a human body to prevent hacking or forged fingerprints. The company plans to improve its personal vehicle customization feature by using technologies such as near field communication (NFC).
