SEOUL -- Using a newly established 5G mobile network, Tottenham Hotspur star Son Heung-min held a live man-to-man football class for a primary school student in South Korea from a stadium in London. SK Telecom (SKT) mobilized new technologies such as 360-degree cameras and virtual reality (VR) devices.

SKT said in a statement Wednesday that the company sponsored the football lesson as a promotional event for "5GX", a project to commercialize a next-generation mobile communication network. Two simulated video call stages were set up in London's Selhurst Football Park and a stadium in Bucheon, a satellite city west of Seoul.

While the top-notch virtual screen in South Korea used SKT's commercial 5G network, a super-fast internet network was used some 8,900 kilometers (5,530 miles) away in London. Live video images were displayed on big silver screens.

Son gave man-to-man lessons about shooting, dribbling and trapping to Jung Hyun-jun, a promising 12-year-old primary school football player as if they were right next to each other. "It was like meeting Son in person," Jung was quoted as saying. South Korean mobile carriers offered limited 5G services on December 1 in Seoul and other cities.
