SEOUL -- Hyundai Construction Equipment (HCE), a construction equipment maker, teamed up with Trimble, an American software company, and SK Telecom (SKT) involved in the establishment of a 5G mobile network, to develop a smart construction platform by using big data and artificial intelligence.

Under a memorandum of understanding, the three companies agreed to commercialize a 5G construction platform called "Smart Construction" by 2020. HCE said Monday that the smart platform is an intelligent technology that collects, analyzes and controls related information for civil engineering.

A drone will measure and transmit 3D data to the server in real time through a 5G network for automatic calculation of the workload. The control center can receive topographical information and progress of the work so that it can set up an optimal construction plan and respond to problems in construction sites in real time. The platform would recognize risk factors to avoid injuries.

HCE would develop intelligent construction equipment and technology capable of responding remotely to the breakdown of construction equipment. SKT is responsible for providing 5G communication services and developing solutions for safety. Trimble would develop terrain surveying using a drone, conversion solutions and a solution to improve the operation efficiency of construction works.

HCE said the smart platform would enable autonomous operation and remote control of construction equipment to improve efficiency and reduce dangers at construction sites.

During a trade fair last month in Shanghai, Doosan Infracore, a South Korean construction machinery manufacturer, demonstrated the remote control operation of an autonomous construction machine. A low-latency image transmitter sent highly-compressed 3D image data shot by cameras mounted on an excavator.

Doosan Infracore has developed self-driving construction machines using a 5G communication network, drones, and ultra-low latency video transmission technology.
