SEOUL --  LG Electronics has made structural changes to strengthen its business in robotics and autonomous driving as its domestic rival Samsung Electronics accelerates a strategic shift to focus on future technologies beyond its smartphone business.

LG Electronics said in a statement Wednesday that it carried out a reshuffle of executives and made structural changes to establish an integrated robotics research center and a new task force in charge of autonomous driving. The company will establish a research and development center for artificial intelligence-related technologies in North America.

LG's autonomous vehicle business team will focus on acquiring core technologies related to the Fourth Industrial Revolution. In November last year, the company released a vehicle to everything (V2X) module based on a 4G communication network for the first time in South Korea.

The robotics research center will focus on developing robot-related products and services. In June, LG made a $ 3 million investment in Bossa Nova Robotics, a San Francisco-based startup that creates retail robots in June this year.
