SEOUL -- LGU+, a mobile carrier involved in the establishment of South Korea's fifth-generation mobile network, partnered with Ericsson-LG and a resort group to establish a 5G ecosystem at theme parks and resort complexes by using artificial intelligence and internet of things (IoT).

In a ceremony Tuesday at Vivaldi Park, a ski resort and water park in Hongcheon, about 60 kilometers (36 miles) east of Seoul, a memorandum of understanding was signed by LGU+, the Daemyung leisure and resort group, Honcheon County and Ericsson-LG, a telecom equipment joint venture between Ericsson of Sweden and LG Electronics.

They agreed to establish AI-based smart resorts and theme parks by combing LGU+'s 5G network and Ericsson-LG's IoT platform. A 5G ecosystem would be introduced first at Vivaldi Park run by the Daemyung group.

An IoT laser sensor measures water quality and checks the level of water pollution in hot springs and swimming pools in real time. Intelligent CCTV-based behavior detection devices prevent drowning and other accidents. Smart tracking services inform the location of kids and senior citizens and there will be IoT helmets, LTE radios with unlimited distance and smart check-in/out sensors.

Experts predict the 5G era will bring a dramatic change to daily life. Technology and telecom companies are in the race to commercialize 5G networks, which are vital for the telecom renaissance to be brought by the Fourth Industrial Revolution. South Korean firms are trying hard to commercialize a 5G mobile network ahead of other countries.
