SEOUL -- Cardinal Andrew Yeom Soo-jung, the archbishop of Seoul, expressed his willingness to accompany Pope Francis if he makes a landmark trip to North Korea, which has been accused of suppressing religious freedom, according to South Korea's ruling party head.

Yeom welcomed the papal trip to North Korea, saying he would go together, Democratic Party chief Lee Hae-chan told reporters Tuesday after talks with the cardinal at Myeongdong Cathedral in central Seoul.

South Korean president Moon Jae-in relayed a verbal invitation from North Korean leader Kim Jong-un during his trip to Europe in October. The presidential office has said the pope would respond if an official invitation arrives. Pyongyang has two Protestant churches and a Catholic cathedral for propaganda.
