SEOUL -- South Korean President Moon Jae-in on Thursday was presented with the highest award of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for his contributions to the success of the 2018 Winter Olympic Games held here.

Moon was presented with the gold order of the IOC in a ceremony held at his office Cheong Wa Dae in Seoul.

IOC President Thomas Bach presented the award.

The country hosted the 2018 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games in PyeongChang, located some 180 kilometers east of Seoul. The events were also attended by North Korea following repeated invitations from the South Korean president.

The Olympics have led to a major breakthrough in inter-Korean ties, with Moon holding his first-ever summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un on April 27, just over a month after the Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games ended.

Moon is believed to be the seventh South Korean to have received the gold IOC order.
