SEOUL -- As part of a South Korea-France autonomous vehicle technology co-development project, Renault Samsung Motors, a local unit of French carmaker Renault, won a temporary approval from the transport ministry to test drive autonomous vehicles on public roads.

South Korea and France agreed in 2016 to co-develop autonomous technologies including traffic jam assist (TJA), an autonomous driving technology used when a self-driving car moves through a road full of traffic in slow speed, by 2020. Renault Samsung joined the co-development project as a South Korean counterpart of French carmaker Renault.

"With the temporary government approval, we will contribute to the autonomous driving industry by researching practical technologies," a Renault Samsung official was quoted as saying.

Renault Samsung said in a statement on Thursday that the company was temporarily approved by the transport ministry to test its autonomous vehicles on roads including test racks and expressways. The South Korean carmaker will continue its research on TJA technology and test its self-driving cars at the speed slower than 50 kilometers per hour (31 miles per hour) on public roads.
