SEOUL -- Doosan Infracore, a leading construction machinery manufacturer in South Korea, teamed up with LGU+, the third-largest mobile carrier, to develop unmanned autonomous construction machines based on a fifth-generation mobile network.

The deal underlines Doosan Infracore's drive to seek new business opportunities in the market for self-driving machines at construction sites. In April, the company acquired an unspecified stake in PoteNit, a start-up specializing in autonomous mobile industrial robots.

Doosan Infracore, a key Doosan group unit, said Tuesday that it signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with LGU+ on cooperation in the smart construction business. The two companies agreed to develop construction machines capable of operating autonomously using a 5G communication network, drones, and ultra-low latency video transmission technology.

Doosan said it would demonstrate remote control construction equipment by the end end of the year, and cooperation will be expanded next year into other areas such as a 3D drone survey, work planning and construction management.

The company said its autonomous machine would transmit the 3D image of construction sites photographed by a drone to the server in real time and automatically calculates the workload.
