SEOUL -- In an effort to strengthen its cloud computing business, Samsung SDS, a leading information technology service provider in South Korea, has acquired a stake in Bitfusion, a U.S. provider of graphics processing unit (GPU) virtualization solutions.

The subsidiary of South Korea's Samsung group said Thursday that it invested an unspecified amount of money in Bitfusion. It refused to disclose details. Samsung SDS has expanded its business area by investing in IT technologies such as blockchain, artificial intelligence and internet of things (IoT).

Samsung SDS said it would use Bitfusion's technology to improve its competitiveness in the cloud computing market. Bitfusion offers software techniques to use in conjunction with hardware to maximize the performance of applications with its software accelerating existing clouds and data centers.

GPU is a specialized electronic circuit designed to rapidly manipulate and alter memory to accelerate the creation of images in a frame buffer intended for output to a display device. Modern GPUs are efficient at manipulating computer graphics and image processing.
