SEOUL -- SK Energy, a refinery arm of South Korea's SK Group, has set up a joint venture with a major Vietnamese terminal operator to build expressway rest facilities for cargo trucks.

SK Energy said in a statement Wednesday that it signed a joint venture deal with Saigon Newport Corp. (SNP), a maritime service and seaport operator controlled by Vietnam's defense ministry. The joint venture, owned equally by the two sides, will build two expressway rest places for cargo trucks near Ho Chi Minh City by the end of next year.

The two partners agreed to gradually expand the network of rest areas across Vietnam, using SNP's infrastructure. SK Energy opened its first rest area for freight trucks in Gwangyang some 300 kilometers (186 miles) south of Seoul, in 2006. It now operates 19 rest areas in South Korea.
