SEOUL -- South Korea's state research institute will test a big data-based medical artificial intelligence (AI) engine called "CyberDX" to verify its ability to diagnose the risk of diseases ahead of its commercialization.
The test will be done with Seoul Clinical Laboratories (SCL), a medical agency specializing in diagnostic testing, according to the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI).
Artificial intelligence (AI) is now used to diagnose and treat patients. Eight hospitals in South Korea have adopted Watson, an AI software created by Intel, for their medical services. ETRI officials said CyberDX will analyze medical data and help doctors prevent diseases such as diabetes, stroke and cancers.
"Our AI engine can analyze medical examination data to find out what kinds of risk a patient has and offer appropriate means for prevention," an ETRI official told Aju News. CyberDX focuses on disease prevention, he said, adding it has shown an impressive outcome in analyzing how much a patient has the risk of getting Alzheimer's disease.
"It provides tailored analytics by comparing a patient's examination data and thousands of samples," he said. The global medical AI market is expected to exceed 5.5 billion US dollars by 2022, according to the Irish market analysis firm Research and Markets.
