SEOUL, Jan. 24 (Aju News) -- "Seosan Eori-gul-jeot", a regional specialty made with fresh oysters from the southwestern seaside city of Seosan, was given an achievement award for promoting the traditional Korean fermented dish to foreign countries.

The regional brand of salted and fermented oyster, or Gul-jeot, received the "Global Specialty" award at the annual Korea Best Brand Awards hosted by Forbes Korea on Tuesday, city officials said.

The regional cuisine with a unique flavor of the ocean is popular as a side dish which matches with any other Korean menus. Gul-jeot, seasoned with minced garlic, finely chopped onion, chili powder and other sorts of spices is served as an accompaniment to cooked rice. Jeot is a category of salted fermented dishes made with seafood.

"Our brand received the award because we have been actively promoting Seosan Eori-gul-jeot to other countries," Park Min-seok, a Seosan city government public relations manager, told Aju News Wednesday.

"Our main target is South Korean immigrants. However, we encourage foreigners to try our special cuisine," Park said, adding producers have focused on people in the United States and Canada.
