LG Electronics jumped into the autonomous vehicle industry with a new module for autonomous driving based on LTE for the first time in South Korea.

LG said in a statement on Monday that it has developed V2X (Vehicle to Everything), a system for autonomous driving using Long-Term Evolution (LTE), a standard for high-speed wireless communication for mobile devices and data terminals.

Currently, many autonomous vehicles use ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance System), a combination of cameras, radar and lidar, a laser-based detection system. LG's new system relies on LTE to receive traffic and other on-road information.

LG said its system could overcome the weaknesses of ADAS by reacting to the environment in real-time. The company described the most important aspect of autonomous driving as safety and said its new module could warn drivers of a dangerous on-road situation in advance.

LG's domestic rival, Samsung, acquired Harman International, an audio and autonomous driving technology company, in March this year and created a 300 million US dollar fund to invest in autonomous driving-related startups and technologies.
