Samsung Electronics has ventured into the mixed reality (MR) market by releasing "HMD Odyssey", a head mounted display unit in partnership with American tech company Microsoft.

Microsoft has focused on MR, a hybrid of virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR), while other firms such as Oculus, HTC and Sony have released VR headsets to be connected to PCs and gaming consoles. Samsung has released "Gear VR", a VR headset.

"The Samsung HMD Odyssey transports consumers to the next frontier of Windows Mixed Reality, which introduces to them to a new, industry-leading virtual reality experience," Samsung said in a statement.

Unlike other VR headsets which provide images created by PCs or consoles, Samsung's new headset is capable of integrating information about the surrounding environment into the projected VR world.

Samsung's HMD Odyssey has a 3.5-inch AMOLED display with a 110-degree field of view and built-in premium headphones. The headset starts up soon after it is plugged into a PC.  Zion, a global market research company, estimates the global VR market will grow to 26.8 billion US dollars by 2020.
