South Korean e-commerce giant Coupang has agreed to establish an eco-friendly distribution center in the southern city of Daegu. Construction will be completed in March 2018.

Coupang will sign a 100 billion won (8.7 million US dollars) deal with the Daegu city government on its distribution center in the city's industrial complex some 235 kilometers (146 miles) south of Seoul.

With Coupang's distribution center, Daegu, which is South Korea's fourth-largest city, aims to change its local economic structure based on manufacturing and service-centered businesses.

"Daegu will upgrade its distribution business by forming an IT integrated high-tech distribution network in a joint operation with Coupang," city mayor Kwon Young-jin told reporters, adding Coupang's distribution center would create about 1,500 new jobs.

Coupang, which started offering daily deals services to online consumers, has grown quickly to become South Korea's largest e-commerce company. The company received a $1.0 billion investment from Japan's Softbank in 2015.  It is popular for "Rocket" deliveries of detergents, foods, and other household items within 24 hours of their purchase.
