Following a hint at a major upgrade to its auto-pilot or self-driving ability for months, US electric car company Tesla has released a video showing off what its new technology can do.

"Tesla drives itself (no human input at all) thru urban streets to highway to streets, then finds a parking spot," Tesla CEO Elon Musk tweeted.

In the video, car drives to a designated spot just like a driver would. When the car detects an unexpected pedestrian, it stops. The video's message reads: "The person in the driver's seat is only there for legal reasons. He is not doing anything. The car is driving itself."

Although the Tesla vehicle missed some lanes and showed a few lousy turning, it drove by itself and parked at a parking space.

Other than finding a parking lot, the self-driving vehicle also showed an ability to find its owner even when he or she is far away. "When you want your car to return, tap Summon on the phone. It will eventually find you even if you are on the other side of the country," Musk said.

Companies such as Google, an MIT startup nuTonomy, Taxi hailing company Uber, and other carmakers are busy trying to develop advanced autonomous driving systems.
