Apple has hired Russ Salakhutdinov, a famous artificial intelligence expert, to lead its research in an apparent counterpunch to rival Samsung's acquisition of Viv, an AI technology developer.

Apple's move underlines an intensifying race for AI technologies. Under Samsung's management, Viv develops AI interfaces that enable to interact with devices, services, and other platforms for individuals. Samsung's new desktop PC "Pulse" released earlier this month features AI based voice assistant. It could run as a smart home hub, connected to other home appliances.

While Samsung focuses on the smart home environment, experts believe Apple will bring a lot of change to its AI based voice assistant program "Siri" as Salakhutdinov can help it understand questions and provide appropriate answers better than before.

While Salakhutdinov has got a new job at Apple, the expert will continue teaching and researching as a professor at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He wrote on his twitter: "Excited about joining Apple as a director of AI research in addition to my work at CMU. Apply to work with my team."
