South Korea's LG Electronics will demonstrate a technical innovation next month with the world's first 120 frames per second high dynamic range broadcasting to provide smooth and clear images.

LG's technology will be shown at  the Internationale Funkausstellung Berlin (IFA) early next month in Germany.

At the trade show, LG said it would collaborate with BBC, the European Broadcasting Union, and Europe's largest satellite broadcasting company ASTRA to demonstrate real-time hybrid log gamma (HLG) broadcasts with high frame rate (HFR) technology applied.

LG aims to dominate the premium TV market by supporting a variety of HDR video technologies.

HFR videos support the 120 frames per second (FPS) format. While previous films were made in 24 FPS, HFR videos provide more vivid, colorful and clear images. HDR highlights and darkens the brightest areas and the darkest areas of the images.

HLG is the next generation broadcasting standard set up by broadcasting companies such as BBC and NHK. While HDR videos can only be watched on the latest TVs, HLG allows older TVs to display HDR videos.

Previously, broadcasting companies used separate channels for conventional TV broadcasting and HDR broadcasting. With HLG technology, they only have to broadcast HRD channels, increasing the frequency usage more efficiently.
