South Korea agreed Monday to participate in a water management project aimed at preventing annual flooding in Thailand's northeastern province, officials said.

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport said it has signed a memorandum of intent with Thailand's Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives to establish a joint working committee.

Thailand has launched a $609 million project to prevent flooding that killed more than 850 people and caused about $46 billion in economic damages in 2011. The disaster has been described as the worst flooding yet in terms of the amount of water and people affected.

The joint committee will discuss South Korea's technical support for the project, the ministry said in a statement. South Korea's state-run K-Water was tapped as a preferred bidder for the project in 2013, but it was scrapped following a coup in Thailand the next year.
