The new upcoming iPhone which is due to be released in the next few months may not be named "iPhone7" but could be called "iPhone6SE", an Apple news blog Apfelpage reported.

Apfelpage's German journalists wrote in their post that Chinese supply chain sources have seen packages and labels indicating the name of the new phone would be iPhone6SE.

The opinions of experts remain split over Apfelpage's report. Some claimed the new iPhone will be named iPhone7 because the tech giant will not break its cycle of launching new hardware. Others support the German journalists, claiming Apple may move to a three-year refresh cycle instead of the current two-year cycle.

Apple released iPhone SE earlier this year, breaking its usual cycle of hardware launching. Although the iPhone SE was not a flagship model and looked the same as the old iPhone 5S, it was equipped with the latest chipsets and an up-to-date rear camera module.

At that time, questions arose over whether the launching of iPhone SE was Apple's measure to extend the product refresh cycle due to changes in the users' smartphone upgrade cycle.

Researches carried out by various organizations showed that consumers are becoming less enthusiastic about upgrading their smartphones. It's mainly because the smartphones work just fine after a typical two-year contract with mobile carriers and the new phones are not attractive enough.

However, what Apple really prepared is to be unveiled when the tech giant opens the lid in the next couple of months. Judging from the company's previous hardware launching event dates, experts believe this year's launching event is very likely to take place during the third week of September.
